Though it isn’t usually fatal, you will have to endure painful inflammations for a few days, which is not exactly an ideal plan for your weekend. Furthermore, you might think that staying at home and not going out often would be your best protection, but you still need at least 15 minutes of sunlight exposure to keep receiving vitamin D benefits.
These tips will assume that you are going out on places like a beach or just around the city.
Sunscreen or sunblock are your best friends, especially in a summer vacation when you want to chill at the beach to enjoy the wind and the sound of oceanic waves. Choose sunscreens with a high number of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to be effectively protected from the penetration of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
A sunscreen with at least 15 SPF is recommended, and it should be the broad spectrum type too. You can tell by looking at the label and see whether it indicates that the sunscreen provides protection against both UVA and UVB. UVA penetrates your skin and is responsible for both premature aging and skin cancer, while UVB affects your skin’s surface and is the culprit of sunburn.
Wear a thick layer around your entire skin, including the face, neck, shoulders, torso, arms and legs. Be mindful that sunscreen can wear off overtime, so if two hours have passed and you are still doing activity under the sun, wear another thick layer.
Also, check your sunscreen’s expiry date so you don’t accidentally wear it past the duration. If there is no expiry date labeled anywhere, its shelf life only lasts three years at best, but shorter if exposed to high temperatures.
While walking outside, you should still shade yourself if it is sunny outside. An umbrella will do the trick, otherwise you should find some shade like a tree, building or even a gazebo and catch a break. Hydrate often to keep your body cool.
Sunhats are also a good choice of apparel to wear under sunlight, or you can wear any other hat that shades your face, ears and the neck with its brim. Tightly woven fabric like canvas can provide the best protection against UV rays. The same goes to darkly colored hats. Don’t wear straw hats with holes of sunlight to expose through.
Wear sunglasses too to protect your eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts.
Avoid peak sunlight
At noon and afternoon until 4PM or so, the sun will already reach its peak in the skies. Unless there are plenty of clouds or shades in your surroundings, avoid any activity underneath the sun between noon and afternoon hours. Not doing this while the blue sky is clear of clouds is a bigger guarantee that sunburn will come to stay for the next week.
